The Scottish Brass Band Association has announced an exciting new series of brass and percussion workshops.

Sunday 20th April will see the Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) hold a series of brass and percussion workshops, as part of its on-going Youth Development Programme.

Encourage

Hosted by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) as part of its already successful Brass Band Day, SBBA is looking to encourage anyone connected with young brass players to come along and learn from the professionals in areas of youth banding including conducting, repertoire, teaching techniques and percussion.

First workshop

The first workshop will commence at 1.30pm in the Guinness Room, with Alan Fernie leading a session on 'Repertoire for Youth Bands'.

Here, Alan will look at the ever-increasing catalogue of music being written for young bands that is more in keeping with what youngsters find interesting and entertaining.

To add another dimension to the workshop, Alan will be assisted by a small group from Loanhead Brass Roots, which will play excerpts from some of the music being discussed.

Techniques

At 3.00pm, James Gourlay will discuss 'Techniques of Teaching', where all aspects of best practice for developing young players will be explored.

As the Director of Music at the RSAMD, and one of the country’s top tuba players, James will pass on some of the expertise that has helped him produce many of the Europe’s leading brass players over the past three decades.

Interactive

In the Concert Hall at 5.00pm, Nigel Boddice and the West Lothian Schools Brass Band will host an interactive workshop/concert, in which Nigel will give advice on 'Conducting the Youth Band'.

Here, he will look at the methods and approach used to get the best results from his young players. In addition, Simone Rebello will appear as guest soloist, as well as giving advice on percussion in brass bands.

Simone Rebello

The final workshop of the day will take place in The Guinness Room at 6.00pm, when Simone Rebello will be available to 'Meet the Player'. In this session, Simone will answer questions from young percussionists and conductors looking to maximise the impact of the percussion section and learn better techniques.

Concerts

In addition to the above workshops, there is a host of brass concerts from 1.00pm, which will include performances from Royal Scottish Academy Brass, National Youth Brass Band of Scotland, Scotia Brass, David Thornton, Kirkintilloch and Whitburn bands.

All Free!

All events are free, but everyone attending will need a ticket, which can be reserved in advance from the RSAMD Box Office (0141 332 5057) or obtained on the day.
