Scottish Brass Band Week

The forthcoming Scottish Brass Band Week is set to highlight the importance of banding north of the border..

SBBA

The Scottish Brass Band Week will take place between the 23rd – 31st May, with some events before and after those dates as part of a wider programme.

Intention

The intention of Brass Band Week is to demonstrate the importance of brass bands in the cultural and musical heritage of Scotland, and the organisers, the Scottish Brass Band Association, hope that they can make the public at large aware of the high technical and artistic standards of their top bands.

Local communities

They also hope to highlight the fact that bands are active in hundreds of communities up and down the country.

Peter Fraser from SBBA told 4BR: "With over 100 bands in Scotland and many thousands of players, we hope to highlight the contribution bands make in the field of music education and the important role which our bands play in the lives of their own local communities."

Idea

Peter added: "The idea behind the campaign is that every band throughout Scotland is asked to undertake at least one event during Scottish Brass Band Week. The exact nature of the event, its scale and its arrangements are up to each individual band."

Ever expanding

This year over 40 events take place around Scotland to promote the ever expanding brass band scene, particularly with the development of a large number of Youth Bands in the past two years as a result of financial support from the Scottish Arts Council and the appointment
of Development Officer Alan Edmond.
