If you are looking for a different gift for Christmas for the practically minded musical person in your life then why not book then on a course to learn how to make a Cornetto?
The four day course is being run by Cambridge Woodwind Makers, led by maker Sam Goble.
Gentle and sweet
The cornetto is a lip-reed instrument that was extensively used in Renaissance and Baroque periods, often to accompany choral works. Made of wood in various sizes, they can either be straight or curved in shape and covered with leather. They produce a bright sound and a tone that is usually gentle and sweet and character.
On the course you will a cornetto from a blank piece of wood, carving the bore, shaping the outside, cutting the diamonds, drilling holes and finally covering your instrument in leather.
You will use historical methods and copy historical instruments at A=440, A=466 or A=440. There will also be discussions on bore theory and a tuning guide will be supplied.
