French euphonium player Tewinn Spiess has claimed the bi-annual Jeju International Euphonium title.

He and fellow finalists, Julian Lamar from Colombia and Aurelien Roussel from France gave performances of 'Symphonic Variants' by James Curnow accompanied by Seogwipo Wind Orchestra.

Recent euphonium winners include Lilian Meurin (2016); Morvin Corentin (2018); Yu-Han Yang (2020); Jose Manuel Vazquez Calatayud (2022) and Domenico Cima (2024).

Unanimous

The judges were unanimous in their result which came after two rounds of on-line and in-person competition.

The 98 first round entrants had to perform Philip Sparke's 'Fantasy for Euphonium', whilst the second round which featured 22 performers from seven different nations included the choice of works by Eric Ewazen, Yasuhide Ito, Roland Szentpali and Philip Wilby alongside Andre Hobson's 'Inspired by Blue'.

Bass trombone, tuba and percussion

Established in 2000, this year there were competitions for euphonium, bass trombone (38 entrants), tuba (91) and percussion (64) won by Tewin, Jang Pilseon, Dias Henrique and Luo Chenxuan respectively.

The bass trombone finalists had to perform Christopher Brubeck's 'Concerto', with the tuba finalists playing the Vaughan-Williams 'Tuba Concerto'. The percussionists performed an own choice work alongside 'Permafrost Concerto' by Albert & Marques.
