Crosskeys recently held a successful day of music making aimed at inspiring the next generation of brass players.
Supported by the Welsh Music organisation Ty Cerdd, it was led by former conductor Sion Rhys Jones and Besson horn star Owen Farr as well as students from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
First hand tuition
Individual and small ensemble groups were able to work through pieces and gain invaluable first-hand tuition and tips before friends and family were able to enjoy the results of the fun packed day with a series of performance spotlights.
Before the closing comments, a quartet of the RWCMD players entertained the audience with a short programme of their own.
Owen and Sion both commented on the high standard of performance and congratulated every player for their excellent contributions. The day did see some awards presented thanks to generous support of Ev-entz Music, COBRA Music Studios and Risca Builders Supply.
The young recipients of the inaugural awards for 'Best Overall Performance', 'Best Slow Melody' and 'Most Promising Performance' went to Ally, Cerys and Nia.
New direction
A spokesperson told 4BR: "We hope this is the first of many solo events. We would like to thank the award sponsors, event sponsors, and especially all the fantastic musicians, volunteers and parents who created the welcoming environment."
This event also marked the completion of the extended process of recruiting for a new Musical Director, with the band now welcoming Dave Collins to the role.

Thanks
With extensive experience, Dave follows in the successful musical footsteps of Sion Rhys Jones and is looking forward to continuing to build on the solid foundations that are in place at the south Wales band.
The band also took the opportunity on the day to thank Sion for his outstanding contribution over the last six years — one that saw the band claim Welsh Regional titles in 2022 and 2023, the latter leading to them coming runner-up at the Third Section National Final.
They also tasted success at Wychavon, the National Eisteddfod and in the Welsh League.
