As featured in their recent brilliant concert appearance with Foden's and Elland Youth Bands, the Superbrass ensemble's performance of 'Red Vest Man', made a huge impression.

It was composed as a dedication to cornet player Buddy Bolden, one of the first great jazz musicians. He was reputed to always perform wearing a red vest.

Perfect jazz

The piece is a New Orleans funeral march, something Bolden would have been called to do many times in his career. It starts with a slow mournful march, featuring solos from trumpet and trombone and finishes with a joyful 2nd line New Orleans rhythm.

Around 8 minutes long, its perfect for First and Second Section level bands — or those with a bit of jazz ambition in their musical souls....
