2019 Tameside Whit Friday details announced

With just over seven weeks to go, all the essential details for this years Tameside Whit Friday contests have been announced.

  The countdown to Whit Friday is well under way with details of the contests in Tameside being announced.

The details for this year's Whit Friday contests which take place on 14th June have been announced by Tameside Council.

The event which is run by the individual contests under the banner of The Friends of the Whit Friday Brass Band Contest Committee is supported by Tameside Council's Cultural Services Department.

There is around £20,000 in prize money to be won on the circuit this year courtesy of the generous financial support from private sponsorship and Tameside Council.

Aldwinians once again off the rota for 2019

Unfortunately, only eleven of the twelve individual contests will take place. As was the case last year, Aldwinians Rugby Club will be unable to host the 2019 Whit Friday Band Contest due to a development project taking place at their ground. They are hoping to be in a position to host once again in 2020 and beyond.

Mossley moves to football ground

The contest in Mossley will no longer take place in St Joseph's School yard but at Seel Park, home of Mossley FC.

The contest is one of a number that have made slight adjustments to its start and finishing times this year.

Six of the best for First to Fourth Sections

The competing bands on this years circuit will notice a change in the way the overall prize money is distributed. In addition to the overall champion, financial incentives will be available for the highest placed bands who compete at six contests or more in Sections 1 to 4 respectively.

With just over seven weeks to go before Whit Friday itself, bands and visitors to the contests are advised to check out the website which gives all the information needed for the various contests in their area.

The full list of prize money and individual contests is as follows:

Tameside Area Open Champions: £2,000, 2nd: £1,000, 3rd: £750, Overall First Section: £500, Overall Second Section: £400 Overall Third Section: £350, Overall Fourth Section: £300 Youth: £200, 2nd £100.

Local Area Champion: £750, 2nd: £600, 3rd: £400

Rushden Town Band

November 25 • Trombone Player. This friendly band is looking for a tenor trombone player to join its ranks. The band enjoys playing at regular concerts each year and is off to the Rhineland next year on its second tour.


Chinnor Silver

November 25 • You need to be quick, we are almost full but just require Eb bass and percussion. We are a friendly, welcoming and ambitious band and start 2025 at the top of our second section ranking table. We rehearse on a Wed evening in our own bandroom in Chinnor.


Hathersage Band
