The Scottish Brass Band Association has expressed its thanks to Philip Harper and Cory Band after they joined the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland for a memorable 60th anniversary concert in Perth on Wednesday evening.
Glorious night
SBBA President Carrie Boax told 4BR: "We were delighted when Philip got in touch nearly two years to discuss options for a concert in Scotland — and even more pleased after they worked so brilliantly with the youngsters throughout Wednesday and rounded things off with a glorious night of music making."
With the support of the Scottish Government's public arts body, Creative Scotland, SBBA were able to bring the world's number 1 ranked band from Wales to work with both the Reserve and Senior ensembles in an intensive day of fun (there were a few snowball fights due to the weather) and hard work at Strathallan School.
The youngsters received tuition and masterclasses from the Cory players before being able to ask some great questions to Philip Harper in a special Q&A session.
Superb
Carrie added: "The way Philip and the band worked with the youngsters was superb, and set the scene for the evening.
We are also grateful to so many supporters such as Band Supplies who have played such an important part in helping us develop these events and occasions.
The sound of Cory and the finest brass and percussion players in Scotland is one that everyone will remember for a very long time, and I know the youngsters were definitely inspired to be part of this unique occasion."
Local credit
During the concert there were outstanding individual contributions from principal cornet Kyle Fitzsimmons and soprano player Hannah Oman, whilst the whole band produced playing that was a credit to their local tutors and bands.
To round things off, Philip Harper was presented with a silver Quaich — one that he promised to fill up with a dram or two when he got home.

Headache
Carrie concluded: "Such has been the response to recent courses and this concert in particular we are now struggling to accommodate all of the young players who are looking to attend this year's summer courses!
It's a brilliant headache to have — and one we will overcome to ensure no young brass or percussion player will ever be left disappointed."
