The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra principal trumpet star James Fountain is to give a performance of the rarely heard concerto, 'Blaze' by composer Philip Lawrence next month.
Originally conceived and dedicated to the late, great London Symphony Orchestra trumpeter Rod Franks, it was premiered by Richard Marshall in New Zealand in 2003 and was subsequently recorded by him with Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
Delighted
The composer is delighted that James will now take up the challenge: "This London premiere is indeed a special one,"Phil told 4BR.
"I don't think there's a more difficult challenge for any trumpet player on a live stage in London at present. James will indeed walk the wire without a safety net, but he is such a brilliant player I am sure he will pull it off."
Role model
The star will be accompanied by Fulham Brass, with their MD John Ward, adding: "We're so pleased that James accepted our invitation to perform with us. He's a fantastic player who has achieved so much and is a great role model for any young player.
"'Blaze' is a remarkable technical challenge that also contains beautiful romantic movements. We can't wait to take on the challenge with him."
Introductions
With the composer working in France on the day of the performance, the highly respected Paul Cosh, James' former teacher, will be introducing the soloist and music to the audience.
Also included in the programme will be 'Royal Parks' by George Lloyd to mark the 35th anniversary of the Hyde Park bombings, Gavin Higgins' 'Ivory Ghosts' and 'Prelude on Tallis' by Peter Graham.
