Competing bands at the forthcoming 2015 Scottish Open have been alerted to revised errata on the set test piece, 'Gallery' by Howard Snell.
The comments were issued by the composer ahead of its Scottish premiere at Perth Concert Hall, Saturday November 28th.
Additions:
Movement 3: Bars 103, 107, and 111 — the vibraphone's rhythms should be the same as the basses.
Movement 4: A clarification at the end of the movement — the bell continues at the same tempo and dynamic right through the pauses and the last bar, fading out with the general ensemble at 'al niente.'
Original Errata:
1. III — Bar 3, 'Solo', missing instruction for Solo Cnt 1 & 2 part
2. III — Bars 16 &18, Baritones 'dims' not 'crescs'.
3. VI — Bar 113, Solo Horn first note A, not G.
Alternative suggestion:
VI — Bar 70, alternative slide position for trombone 2, (3---6)
The comments below were sent by Howard Snell to a conductor in response to questions:
The timpani is intended to be played with wooden sticks for the whole of 'Cut-Outs', and can remain as such to the end of 'Landscapes' or change back for 'Landscapes' bar 48, the first convenient moment.
I like to leave these points for the conductor to decide... which I realise is not helpful when some adjudicators might fuss about them (very unlikely here).
Regarding the ensemble in 'Landscapes' bars 17 and 19 (in fact 17 into 21) — the ensemble between the descending trombones and then timps and the chords on the first beat of each bar is essential due to the harmony at those points.
The time values of the downwards 'line' (troms and timp) are obviously not even, but the passage is relatively free for the conductor to manage — as the 'rall' and the 'molto' suggest/allow. There does need however to be a sense of the varying time values as the line goes downwards into bar 21.
Any further comments that I send out in reply to questions I will forward to Peter Fraser for onwards transmission to all bands.
