2015 National and British Open champion Black Dyke is to link up with the New York Staff Band of the Salvation Army for an outstanding ‘Best of Brass’ concert in Manchester in June.
Iconic ensembles
The iconic ensembles will perform at the Royal Northern College of Music on Thursday 25th June, under the direction of their renowned conductors Prof Nicholas Childs and Ron Waiksnoris.
Each band will deliver its own programme before joining together in ‘Breezin’ Down Broadway’, followed by a new Dorothy Gates’ cornet feature.
The finale, ‘Shine as the Light’, which was originally written for the NYSB, will be conducted by the composer Peter Graham, who was recently appointed to the position as Black Dyke Band’s Creative Chair.
Immense stature
Black Dyke Director of Music, Professor Nicholas Childs, told 4BR: “Ron Waiksnoris is a bandmaster of immense stature and I’m sure the Manchester audience will thoroughly enjoy listening to him leading the performances of one of the world’s finest Salvation Army bands.”
Highest honour
In response, the NYSB’s bandmaster added: “Visits to England by the New York Staff Band are pilgrimages to the home and birthplace of both the Salvation Army and brass bands.
The invitation from Prof Childs and Black Dyke to share a concert is a high honour and privilege. We look forward to a spectacular time together."

Wonderful evening
Meanwhile, Peter Graham added: “The joint concert will be an event not to be missed. Having had the privilege of an association over the years with both of these great ensembles it is a personal thrill to take part in what I am sure will be a wonderful evening of music making."
