Once again there is a great selection box prize from 4BR and our friends at Ev-entz — as long as you can get your thinking caps on?
Contemporary music and CDs
We have another great selection box this week with some great contemporary pieces from the pens of two of the most exciting young talents in the banding world — and from both ends of the contesting spectrum.
For those really wishing to try something different and exotic – and to test your reading skills to the full, we have Paul McGhee’s wonderful ‘Waiting for a Pain Hit!??!!?’ which was used as the set work for the Championship Section of the 2010 Swiss National Championships.
For something a bit easier (aimed at bands at Fourth and Youth Section level) we have the equally exotic, ‘A Breathless Gnu Kiss!’ written by Norwegian composer Idar Torskangerpoll – a work that will get players thinking and enjoying something a little different too.
All that and we also have three CDs from trombonist Simon Johnson, Derick and Stephen Kane and a classic oldie from Steven Mead to add to the package too.
French lesson
With the 4BR Editor just enjoying a cracking school edition performance of Victor Hugo’s ‘Les Miserables’ in Newport this week, we thought we would test your Gallic music knowledge.

A: Jean Valjean
B: Jean Baptiste Arban
C: Jean Pierre Rives
Clues
He wasn’t a famous blond headed French rugby player or a sewer crawling hero with a penchant for causing Inspector Javert more problems catching him than Ronnie Biggs did ‘Nipper’ Read of Scotland Yard....
And he must have been one heck of a cornet player....
Closing date:
All answers for this one must be in by midnight on Sunday 3rd February.
Last Winner
We had a great response to last week’s quiz, with Tom Jowett identifying that the non banding trophy on the right of the picture, was the Australian Open Men’s Singles Trophy –eventually won by Novak Djokovoc in Melbourne by beating Scotland’s Andy Murray.
He gets his hands on the score and parts for the concert work, ‘World Tour’ and the cracking Eb soprano solo ‘Serenade’ — plus solo CDs from Norwegian euphonium virtuoso Tormod Flaten, cornet star Carl Saunders and international trumpet player Philippe Schartz.
