Kingdom Brass, conducted by Bede Williams recently made it a ‘Double’ Dunfermline triumph as both their senior and ‘B’ bands claimed the honours at the Fife Festival, held at the town’s Carnegie Hall.
Activate
The senior ensemble took the Championship title thanks to a programme that saw them start with Matthew Hall’s pulsating ‘Activate’, before trombone soloist Chris Mansfield delivered a sparkling rendition of ‘Bolivar’. The contrasting ‘Japanese Slumber Song’ led into the finale of ‘Dundonnell’ from ‘Hymn of the Highlands’.
It proved to be just enough in the opinion of adjudicator John Boax to give the band a narrow one point victory over Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass, who returned home with the prizes for ‘Best Basses’ and ‘Best Instrumentalist’ to soprano player Gordon Kyle.
Impress
Not to be outdone, Kingdom Brass ‘B’ also took the £200 prize on offer in the Fourth Section after impressing adjudicator Raymond Tennant with a winning programme that started with ‘Valero’, leading into ‘Share My Yoke’ featuring cornet soloist Gavin Spowart, ‘Libertango’ and ‘Ritual Fire Dance’.
First Section
In the First Section, Newmilns & Galston conducted by Alan Cameron, entertained the audience and adjudicator John Boax, with their winning programme that featured ‘Dance of the Tumblers’, the euphonium solo ‘Rev. Archie Beaton’, which saw Scott Kerr take the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ Award, ‘Sleep’ by Eric Whitace and the finisher of ‘Candide’.
Fine contributions
Coalburn Silver, directed by Gareth Bowman took the Second Section honours thanks in part to a fine ‘Best Instrumentalist’ contribution from flugel player Trevor Gray, whilst the Third Section title was claimed by Renfrew Brass directed by Mark Good.
