The Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) has announced details of its forthcoming Conducting Weekend Workshops.

Design

The two short courses are designed for conductors of Lower Section/Youth Bands or Advanced Level Bands, with tailored guidance and will be led by Alan Withington, Nigel Boddice, Alan Fernie and Lynsey Paterson.

Supported by the Co-operative Funeralcare Band and King’s Park Youth Band, the weekends will take place at The Couper Institute, 86 Clarkston Road, Glasgow on 14th and 15th April, culminating with a concert between the supporting bands on the Sunday evening.

Limited places

Places are limited, so conductors wishing to participate should return their payment and booking forms (available from www.sbba.org.uk) to SBBA’s Secretary, Tom Allan, by 6th April.

Structured

The courses are structured around comprehensive schedules and aim to offer delegates advice, guidance and insight on conducting techniques and approaches, specific to the demands of the relevant level of their band.

Through presentations, workshops, masterclasses, full and smaller group sessions, the weekend promises to offer valuable advice to assist delegates in improving the effectiveness of their own conductor/band relationships.

Tailored

The courses are run in parallel and include attendance of two days of tailored workshops, presentations, master-classes and demonstrations aimed at conductors of either advanced level bands or Lower Section/Youth bands.

Access to the course advisers for one-to-one discussions, a take-home copy of the featured score used in the workshops/master-classes, refreshments and attendance at the joint concert are also provided.

Valuable

A spokesperson told 4BR: "It offers valuable weekends of instruction and insight which has been partly funded by Creative Scotland funding through the Youth Music Initiative.

The nominal all-in course fees are £40.00 for the Lower Section/Youth Band Conducting course and £80.00 for the Advanced Level Band Conducting course."

Recommended

They added: "Due to the tailored, ‘hands-on’ nature of the weekend, spaces are limited in numbers. It is, therefore, highly recommended that you register your place as soon as possible."
