Banding Symposium in Belfast

A huge Wind Band Symposium is to take place in Belfast later this month.

 

On the 11th and 12th of this month a Symposium entitled ‘Wind Bands in Cross-Cultural Perspective’, will be held at Queen’s University Belfast.

Exploration

The event is sponsored by the School of History and Anthropology and the Queen’s Internationalization Fund and will explore the range of issues of ethnomusicological, anthropological and sociological interest in addition to theoretical and methodological orientations opened up by the neglected field of wind and brass band research.

The programme includes discussion sessions on numerous topics, including:

The Military Legacy on Global Wind Bands (Discussant: Professor Trevor Herbert, Open University)

Colonialism & Globalization (Discussant: Professor Robert Boonzajer Flaes, University of Amsterdam)

Place & Space (Where the Bands Perform Geographically and in which Contexts)(Discussants: Dr. Domnic Bryon and Dr. Suzel Reily, Queens University Belfast)

Archives, Manuscripts, and Repertoires (Discussant: Mary Angela Bison, Museu da Inconfidência/UNICAMP)

Music Education & Community Music-Making (Discussants: Professor David Hebert, Sibelius Academy, Finland; Gordon Ramsey, Queens University Belfast)

Development of Instruments & Instrumentation in Global Traditions (Discussant: Dr. Richard Jones)

Competitions (Discussant: Dr. Katherine Brucher, DePaul University; Sylvia Bruinders, South African College of Music

Discussions

During the symposium there will be discussions and revision of materials that will be included in a book compendium of information and topics relevant to performance practice in global wind and brass band phenomena.

In addition there will be a number of concerts and opportunities to meet and discuss matters associated with bands, where ever they originate.

Harlow Brass Band

February 27 • We are a friendly, non-contesting band who have the following vacancies:. Trombones, 2nd Horn, Back Row Cornets, Percussion. . We rehearse every Thursday in Harlow, 8-10pm and play at local events throughout the year.


Newmarket Town Band

February 27 • Newmarket Town Band is inviting applications for the post of 'Musical Director'. We are a non-contesting band who play to a high standard with regular bookings throughout the year. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays 7:30 - 9:30pm


Banks Brass Band

February 25 • It's not too late to join Banks Brass Band, a friendly non-contesting band near Southport. All players welcome particularly euphoniums, trombones and basses. Rehearsals: Mondays 8.00-9.30pm in the Hub@Banks community centre, PR9 8BL
