There was a fine turn out of talent from in and out of the Principality at Newport last weekend.

Gwent Music Services

The fourth Gwent Youth Brass Solo & Quartet Contest took place on Saturday 30th May at the YMCA Centre, Newport, where a great turn out of talented players sought to impress Steve Sykes and Katrina Marzella.

Successful

It was a very successful day with 135 brass players taking part, representing bands and schools within Greater Gwent plus entries from Upper Rhondda, the Forest of Dean, Shropshire, Camborne and St. Dennis in Cornwall.

Spellbound

The proceedings were handled very smoothly by Andrew Jones and Christopher Turner, both tutors with the Gwent Music Support Service, and before the announcement of the results Katrina and Steve displayed their own playing talents to the full — captivating the appreciative audience — especially the awe struck youngsters!.

Next year

Following the success of this event, the date of next year’s Contest will be Saturday 5th June 2010.

Winners

On the day there was a quartet of wins for Chloe Abbott, cornet from the Camborne Band, who showed her classy sound and stamina, whilst there was also wonderful playing from Brendan Caddy, soprano from St. Dennis Band who bagged a brace of titles.

Local cornet talent Harry Lloyd of Rogerstone Band produced a clear focused sound to register his win in the Slow Melody class, whilst the local youth bands also had a great day with Abergavenny Borough, Ebbw Vale and Crosskeys Silver winning in the various Quartet and Ensemble classes.
