The Sydney Metropolitan Band Branch Young Musician of the Year Award was announced at the annual Solo & Ensemble competition held on the weekend.

Chris Moran from the Sutherland PCYC Concert Band was announced as the winner for 2009.

The nomination from Sutherland PCYC Concert Band said: "Chris Moran is a truly dedicated musician with a passion for learning and experiencing new styles...He is an inspiration and role model to younger members."

Five nominations were considered for the award:
Daniel Johnson, Mountains Youth Band
Jacqueline Luck, Yagoona District Band
Sarah Meldrum, City of Wollongong Brass Band
Chris Moran, Sutherland P.C.Y.C Concert Band
Jessica Taggart, Meriden School Concert Band
