Victorian Bands League

The Victorian Bands’ League (VBL) presented its Showcase 2008 Concert 2pm Sunday 30 November at Melba Hall, Melbourne University, Royal Parade, Parkville.

Keith Ford and members of the Huffers and Puffers, an ensemble made up of some of the Victorian Bands' Leagues most esteemed retired players, performed as the pre-concert entertainment on the day.

The VBL Showcase was initiated by VBL President Chris Bowman last year to celebrate the best of banding in Victoria.

Showcase Aims

The main aims for Showcase are to feature outstanding band and solo talent, and provide opportunities for ensembles that have undergone significant development and improvement, and to demonstrate community band music that is innovative.

It's impossible to have everyone performing in an afternoon concert, so each year VBL Showcase is be programmed to give as many people as possible the chance to be involved, seeking to provide great entertainment, with variety and interest.

2008 Artists

This year, the program featured special guest artist cornet virtuoso and conductor Russell Gray, the Victorian State Youth Brass Band, the Footscray Yarraville City Band, the Eltham Concert Band and the Mordialloc Jazz Orchestra.

Also featured were the current Victorian State Champion of Champions, Matthew van Emmerik and Lauren Whitehead.

Award Recipients

The VBL acknowledged significant contributions by individuals within the movement with the following awards:
Most Outstanding Musician of the Year: David Barker
Young Musician of the Year: Josh Rogan
Musical Director of the Year: Alwaynne Strentz
Drum Major of the Year: Paul O'Toole
