The Fife Charities Band Association held their 63rd Annual Open Contest last weekend, in the Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy.

On top

The two top section bands, Dalmellington and Kingdom Brass, shared the spoils on the day, with Dalmellington under Archie Hutchison coming out on top overall with their performance of 'The Year of the Dragon'.

Kingdom Brass, conducted by Craig Anderson, ended up in the runners up place but pushed them all the way with a thrilling 'St Magnus' getting a run out before next month’s Scottish Open contest.

The two bands also shared the individual awards, with a deighted Dalmellington winning best horn for John Boax, euphonium (David McKellar) and trombone Derek Kirkwood, and Kingdom Brass winning best cornet and best bass section4BR

March winners

Dalmellington won the march contest with a performance of 'Mephistopheles', and Kingdom Brass won the hymn tune contest playing 'Nicaea'.

The two bands also shared the individual awards, with a deighted Dalmellington winning best horn for John Boax, euphonium (David McKellar) and trombone Derek Kirkwood, and Kingdom Brass winning best cornet and best bass section.

Best Fife Band

Kingdom Brass also regained the title of “Best Fife ‘A’ Band”, winning the impressive association trophy.

Band Chairman Bill Sandell told 4BR: "For us it’s very important to hold the association title, with the amount of work we currently do in the area of youth development. We want our young players to be part of a successful organisation, and that starts with the local contests."

Bill added: "We had a disappointing performance and result in 2007, but it’s a fantastic feeling to win back the title we had held every year since our formation in 1999 right up to last year."

Section prizes

The sectional prizes went to Clackmannan District (1st Section), City of Discovery (2nd Section), Coalburn Silver (3rd Section) and Brass Sounds Inverclyde (4th Section).

Dunfermline Town also won the tile of “Best Fife ‘B’ Band”. The youngest player award went to Scott Nicol of Brass Sounds Inverclyde.

The adjudicators for the contest were Russell Gray (Open, March and Hymn contest) and Katrina Marzella (individual awards). Katrina also appeared in a pre-results concert with the regional youth band, FY:NG.
