The Pontypridd Brass Band Festival has launched its 2027 Young Composer Competition designed to encourage the next generation of composers writing for brass bands.
Composers are asked to seek inspiration from the rich tradition of Welsh hymn tunes and sacred music to write what they call, "an original, engaging and memorable work that showcases the unique colours and possibilities of the modern brass band."
Variety
A spokesperson stated: "The inspiration may be reflected in a variety of ways, from direct references and quotations through to more subtle influences in melody, harmony, structure or atmosphere.
The competition is intended to encourage creative responses to this important part of Wales' musical heritage rather than prescribe a particular style."
Mentoring
Entrants will have the opportunity to have their music considered by an experienced panel of adjudicators, receive feedback on their work in competing for a cash prize.
In addition it will also come with a mentoring opportunity for the winner from Dr Robert Childs in order to create a final version of the piece, before it is performed by the bands participating in the 2027 Pontypridd Brass Band Festival.
Details:
The competition is open to composers aged 25 years or under on 1st January 2027.
The composition must be between 3 and 4 minutes in duration.
