It has been announced that there is to be an "indefinite postponing" of the ConsTest: Birmingham Open Contest.
Set up by organiser Mikey Foley-Hall in 2023 as part of his final year studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, it quickly became a popular addition to the contesting schedule for bands at all levels with its progressive approach in a contest day that featured performances from bands from the Fourth to Championship Section.
No guarantee
In a statement announcing the news he said that he could not guarantee being able to meet the commitment required to enhance the event further. This he said, "would leave the event at risk of being underdeveloped, or underprepared."
Over its four-year period the event gained widespread acclaim for the way he and his team produced a contest day of vibrancy and relevance through its musical as well as organisational outlook.
Proud
He stated: "I have loved crafting the event along with creating opportunities for our bands, and myself career wise. I could not be prouder, or more grateful, with how well received our event has been.
I feel incredibly proud and grateful for what has been achieved. We tackled the issues we set out to address, hopefully restoring a sense of positivity around contesting and inspiring others to rethink their approach so the movement can grow."
I step away knowing we have accomplished our initial goals, even as I recognise that the broader task of influencing the contesting space remains unfinishedMikey Foley-Hall
No plans
In thanking the support he gained from the venue, bands, sponsors and broadcasters, he said that the decision was "compounded by awkward scheduling at our venue for next year".
He added: "While ConsTest may potentially return one day, there are no plans for this soon. I step away knowing we have accomplished our initial goals, even as I recognise that the broader task of influencing the contesting space remains unfinished."
