Fresh from their memorable success in claiming their highest placed finish at the European Championships in Linz, the Italian Brass Band from Rome has continued its pioneering artistic approach in reaching out to new audiences.
They recently performed over two days at the Licinio Refice Conservatory of Frosinone conducted by MD Giuseppe Saggio, alongside students from the conservatory's departments of brass, percussion and conducting.
Long standing
The initiative consolidates a long-standing collaboration, one that has flourished thanks to the work of the conservatory's Professor of Conducting and Instrumentation, Antonia Sarcina, which has built a vital link in promoting the culture of the British style brass band in Italy.
In recognition of her key role and support she was awarded the title of 'Honorary Maestro' of the Italian Brass Band.
Immerse
Over the weekend, masterclasses allowed students to immerse themselves in brass band repertoire.
It saw them jointly work on both original compositions and transcriptions, with the band showcasing compositions by John Ireland ('A Downland Suite'), Sparke ('Marcho Brioso') 'La Suerte de los Tontos' (J. Richards, arr. P. Harper) and 'Gaelforce' (Peter Graham), whilst soloists Gabriele Paggi (Principal Cornet), performed Curnow's 'Concertpiece', and Nicolo Iannilli (Solo Euphobium), played Sparke's 'Pantomime'.
A particular highlight was the performance by guest soloist, 13 year old Leonardo D'Azzena, who recently participated in the European Solo Competition in Linz, whose spectacular interpretation of 'Virtuosity' captivated the audience.
Shared mission
A spokesperson for the Italian Brass Band told 4BR: "This event further confirms ours shared mission with the Licinio Refice Conservatory to promote brass band music and reach out to an audience that continues to grow and appreciate our artistic endeavours."
