International Women's Day will be marked with a musical celebration by Norwegian Champion Eikanger Bjorsvik Musikklag at Bergen's Grieghallen on Sunday 8th March (4.00pm local time)
The band will be led by Katrina Marzella-Wheeler on a programme themed 'SHE — A tribute to the women of the world'.
World premiere
The Scottish conductor will lead an eclectic showcase of works — including a world premiere of a new trombone concerto 'Urfremføring' by Elisabeth Vannebo to be performed by Eikanger's acclaimed former principal trombonist Grethe Tonheim with her current band Bjorsvik Brass.
Also featured will be Errolynn Wallen's 'Chrome', written originally for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain in 1997, and first performed by Eikanger 26 years ago.
Vitality
Speaking about the event, Katrina told 4BR: "The programme celebrates both the extraordinary vitality of music written for the medium by female composers as well as works inspired by women.
'Chrome' is a stunning work, as fresh today as it was when first written — fiercely energetic, colourful and hypnotic, whilst Elisabeth Vannebo's 'Timelines' brings an exciting addition to the repertoire and her trombone concerto is going to be a delight played by the amazing Grethe Tonheim.
The wonderful Lucy Pankhurst provides us with 'Storm', whilst there is also a work from the pioneering Imogen Holst, with 'The Unfortunate Traveller' — which is something I'm not given the chance to work with Eikanger for this concert!"
Energy and joy
She added: "All this and we have a fantastic arrangement of Arturo Marquez's 'Danzon No. 2' which was dedicated to his daughter Lily who must have been someone with limitless energy and joy."
Tickets can be purchased on the venue.
