Despite just missing out on a qualification slot for the Royal Albert Hall last weekend in Bedworth, Derwent Brass will now look forward to their Senior Cup appearance at the British Open Spring Festival boosted by a new solo trombone signing.
Wilshaw
Rob Wilshaw takes on the role, with the former Royal Birmingham Conservatoire graduate hoping to make his experience tell as the band looks to take a step closer to the British Open.
Having performed with the likes of Flowers and more recently Grimethorpe and Desford, he told 4BR: "I've always had a great relationship with Derwent Brass, having guested over the years. Their commitment to excellence, artistic ambition, and professionalism have always impressed me.
The band continues to go from strength to strength, and I'm excited to be part of the journey."
Changes
Rob takes over from Simon Baum, who moves to second trombone following the departure of Alex Bland, whose busy conducting schedule saw him take three bands at the recent Midlands Championships.
The band has thanked him for his commitment and has wished him well on his exciting new conducting path.

Delighted
Musical Director Jack Capstaff told 4BR: "I'm delighted to welcome Rob. Having known him for many years, I've always admired his virtuosic playing.
His arrival is a fantastic boost for a band in a great place, receiving consistent critical acclaim both on and off the contest stage."
In recent months the band has also welcomed new signing in the form of Jack Rudin (euphonium) and Dale Hopkins (horn), with the MD adding: "It's wonderful to attract such talented, passionate and committed young players — not just for the immediate benefit of the band, but also for our long-term plans."
