The performance of Tylorstown Band at the Welsh Open Entertainment contest in Newport today (Saturday 15th February) will be marked with both joy and sadness in memory of their much loved solo euphonium player Angela Westacott, who passed away on Sunday 9th February.
Angela was the driving force behind Tylorstown Band, Rhondda Fach Youth Band and South Wales Youth Band, and not only set the standard with her playing ability, but also with her inspirational organising skills.
4BR was told that it was her wish that the band perform and enjoy the occasion just as she had done so many times over the years — led by her brother Robert and with her partner Kevin and family members on stage.
Awards
During her time with Tylorstown Band, the band won two National titles, were National Eisteddfod of Wales Champions, Welsh League Champions and Welsh Regional Champions — aided on numerous occasions by her award-winning contributions.
The band has shared its grief with her loving family — a partner, mother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law and a dear friend to who knew her, enjoyed her company, infectious personality and love of life.
Huge impact
The family told 4BR: "Angela had a huge impact on youth music. Starting with Rhondda Fach Youth Band which later joined forces which was to flourish into the South Wales Youth Band. This idea came from her wanting to give young people the same opportunities that she had as a young brass player.
Alongside a fabulous group of people, she led the way with absolute focus and determination, creating opportunities for the youth band to participate in the European Youth Championships on two occasions, in Birmingham and Malmo, memories that will last a lifetime for both players and tutors.
Legacy
They added: "Angela's legacy forever resonates with Tylorstown and South Wales Youth Band and she leaves a huge hole not just in the lives of those who loved her but the wider banding world."
