The Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival returns for its 37th festival with a celebration of the Georgian heritage later this year.
Held between Friday 23rd and Sunday 25th May, the major strand of this year's programme looks at Beverley through the eyes of 18th century diarist and gentlemen John Courtney, reflecting on the music that was an important part of his life at a time when the town was at the centre of Georgian society.
Highlights
Highlights include Georgian focused lectures, walks, concerts and musical activities for younger members of the family presented alongside award-winning musicians.
The instrumental ensemble Florilegium with soprano Rowan Pierce will open the festival featuring the music Handel, as well as the award-winning vocal ensemble Stile Antico with a celebration of the Renaissance master composer Palestrina.
Nardus Williams
Soprano Nardus Williams, who has sung with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain will also be featured alongside lute player Elizabeth Kenny in a programme of wild extravagance and contradictions in an afternoon of storytelling from 17th century Italy.
The BBC New Generation Baroque Ensemble Augelletti also returns for an action-packed weekend residency.
Joyful weekend
Festival Director Dr Delma Tomlin MBE told 4BR: "We're delighted to be back in Beverley for what is always a joyful weekend of music and friendship in the glorious market town.
Roger Lewis Chair of the Georgian Society added: "We are glad to support the festival given its emphasis on the Georgian period. With its built environment and history, Beverley is the perfect setting for this year's concerts and events."
