After a busy end to 2024 Wantage Band has returned to a new year of rehearsals with changes in their cornet section.
It follows the departure of Michael Kennett who occupied the repiano seat for the last few years. He has left to start a new chapter in his young life in Perth in Western Australia, with the best wishes of the Wantage organisation helping him on his way.
Repiano role for Selvidge
It sees long serving principal cornet Richard Selvidge step into the role, with the player stating: "After 15 years on the solo cornet bench, I felt the time was right for a change and this is the perfect opportunity to make the move.
I'm really looking forward to contributing to the continued improvement of the band."
New principal
Russell Jackson who joined two years ago now moves up to the principal cornet seat.
A professional trumpet player and highly experienced teacher and musician, he is also relishing his new role, starting at the band's first concert of the year on Sunday 9th February, where they will preview their forthcoming Welsh Open entertainment programme.
"I originally depped fat the Grand Shield in 2022,"he said. "I'd had a break for some years before this, but, when asked if I would join little did I know that I'd have the privilege of being in the principal cornet seat a couple of years on.
I love the community and atmosphere at Wantage and see exciting years ahead."
Oxford recruit
Wantage has also welcomed Stephanie Jonas. The former Northop Silver Band and National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain player, Steph has relocated to the area where she studies music at Oxford University.
She joins a club of Oxford students who make their way to play with the band each week.
These are great moves for the band. Since taking over as conductor in 2023 the band has risen to every challenge I've set. I'm excited for this yearMD, Chris King
Welcome
Speaking about the new cornet set up Band Chairperson Sam Wyne told 4BR: "We've been strengthening our links with Oxford University for some time now. Steph is one of three full time students in the band and we are all the better for it.
She is a talented player and it's been great to see her already so well embedded within the group."
This was echoed by MD Chris King who added: "These are great moves for the band. Since taking over as conductor in 2023 the band has risen to every challenge I've set. I'm excited for this year.
We have one more cornet vacancy to fill, so if you wish to join a progressive exciting band please get in touch."
