Gernon steps down from MD role

St John's Band (Mossley) is looking for a new MD as Martin Gernon steps down after successful tenure with the baton.

Martin Gernon was at the helm during a successful 2024.

St John's Band (Mossley) has confirmed that Musical Director Martin Gernon has resigned from the role.

Having joined earlier this year he led them to a top-ten finish at the North West Regional Championships, before enjoying a highly successful Whit Friday, winning 'Best Fourth Section Band' accolades at four events to become Tameside Fourth Section Champion.

That was added to with podium finishes at the Buxton and Holme Valley contests before success in winning the Fourth Section at the Red Admiral Entertainment contest in September. The band came fourth on their last outing together at the Rochdale Contest in October.

Respect

A spokesperson told 4BR: "Unfortunately, due to his work obligations, Martin can no longer continue with us. While we are saddened to see Martin leave, we fully understand and respect his decision to prioritize his professional life.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Martin for his time, patience, and the remarkable success he has brought to our band—success that we once thought was beyond our reach.

We wish Martin all the best in his new venture and sincerely hope that we may have the opportunity to work with him again in the future."

Rewarding

In response, Martin added: "Thank you so much for my time at the band. Amazing and hard working group and very rewarding for any conductor coming in."

The band is now seeking a new MD.
