The Italian Brass Band, based in Rome, recently welcomed Black Dyke Band's principal cornet Richard Marshall to undertake a special weekend masterclass with them.
After landing in the Eternal City on the Friday, the Geneva instrument artist was also able to enjoy a rehearsal with the band in preparation of a concert which would conclude his visit on the Sunday evening.
Fantastic experience
Band spokesperson Giovani Celestino told 4BR: "Saturday saw our eager cornet players enjoy a fantastic experience. Richard's technique and ability to explain just how to approach individual practice but also team work and problem solving on test-pieces was incredible."
He added: "Richard had time for everyone, to explore problems and how to sort them out. Our cornet players were all inspired!"
Next generation
On the Sunday Richard took the opportunity to have a quick look around Rome and enjoy the wonderful cuisine, before he performed as a soloist with the Italian Brass Band in a concert at the famous Ennio Morricone School, where he performed 'Miss Blue Bonnet', 'Melody of the Heart' and 'People'.
The band, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year also took the opportunity to showcase their talents on works such as 'The Essence of Time', Ruslan and Ludmilla' and 'William Tell'.
Giovani added: "During the masterclass Richard was not only impressed by the senior players, but especially by 11-year-old Leonardo Dazzena.
So much so that he asked our conductor Giuseppe Saggio, to allow Leonardo to play as a soloist with him. It was such a wonderful gesture from Richard and we were all in tears when they played!"
He added: "This was a fantastic visit and out thanks go to Richard for being such an inspiration to us. We hope he will come back again to Rome in the future."

Great three days
In response, writing on his Facebook site, Richard said: "Thank you Italian Brass Band for a great three days, and to the cornet section — you worked so very hard.
What a privilege it was to meet young Leonardo as well. He is a star of the future and I was so happy to give him the opportunity to join me in one of my solos. This really shows the Italian Brass Band School of Brass is going in the right direction."
He added: "And finally thank you Giovanni Celestino, Francesco Crivello for being the best hosts. And to Italy for your wonderful food. Massive thanks also to Geneva Instruments for your continued support."
