David Childs has been honoured with the distinction of becoming a Distinguished Research Professor at the University of North Texas (UNT).
Now in his sixth year as Professor of Euphonium and co-Director of the UNT Brass Band, the accolade recognises his "exceptionally outstanding" academic and musical contribution to the faculty and university.
Advocacy
His work has significantly raised the profile of brass instrumental studies, leading to worldwide interest from students, whilst his pioneering advocacy for the euphonium has most recently seen him perform the wind band version of Peter Graham's concerto 'Force of Nature' at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, a global event that attracts over 20,000 visitors.
Towards the end of last semester, he enjoyed a mini-residency at the University of Georgia, where he gave a masterclass, recital and performed in concert with the UGA brass band under the baton of former New York Philharmonic Principal Trumpeter, Philip Smith.
Last month he represented UNT in a series of concerts in South Korea with cornet and trumpet star, Philip Cobb.
USA return
He is due to fly back to the USA this weekend to perform in Philadelphia where he will give the USA brass band premiere of the work at the Mid-Atlantic Brass Band Festival at Rowan University, conducted by his father, Dr Robert Childs.
Speaking about the latest accolade David told 4BR: "I'm delighted to receive this award and am grateful to my wonderful colleagues for their continued support. Working with my students and being part of UNT's esteemed music faculty remains a great privilege."

Looking forward
He added: "I've had a great time at the Mid-Atlantic Brass Band Festival previously, but I'm especially looking forward to this one, not only working with some fine bands, but spending some time with my dad."
Participants at this year's MABBF include Atlantic, Chesapeake, Imperial, New England, Penn View, Princeton, Rockville, Rowan Atlantic Youth, Rowan University and Rutgers University brass bands. During the gala concert David will also perform as soloist with Atlantic Brass Band.
