4BR has been informed of the death of scaba Vice President Ron Gray, who passed away peacefully in hospital on Tuesday 14th January.
Ron first became interested in the banding world during his National Service in the RAF in 1950, when he joined the station band in what was then Southern Rhodesia on cornet.
He later went on to perform with Weymans Band before joining Godalming Town Band in 1954. He stayed at Godalming as a playing member for 56 years, starting out on solo cornet and finishing up on Eb tuba.
Dedicated service
A scaba spokesperson told 4BR: "Ron's involvement in scaba started in the 1960's, giving his time, energy, expertise and knowledge up until his death. He was the Association's Registrar for over 20 years and also served for many years on the London & Southern Counties Regional Contest team.
In 2018 he and his wife Ivy were appointed Vice Presidents of scaba with our grateful thanks for their many years of dedicated service."
The funeral details will be released in due course.
