The forthcoming concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Greater Gwent Youth is set to feature two new commissions from the pen of former player, Daniel Bickerton.
Daniel is now Head of Undergraduate Studies at Cardiff University, with his fanfare entitled, 'As Alive As Ever' and the concert work, 'Breaker of Stones' to be performed at the concert at Rougemont School on Saturday 4th January.
Breaker of Stones
The title 'Breaker of Stones' comes from the Welsh 'Torfaen' — now the name of one of the three local authorities whose pupils make up the band.
It refers to the old name for the Afon Lwyd ('grey river') — which flows through the county borough from its source north of Blaenavon southward through Abersychan, Pontypool, and Cwmbran. It also quotes an old Welsh hymn tune 'Llef' used as a mining song.
The concert led by conductors Gareth Ritter and Sean O'Neil (3.00pm) will be followed by a special 3-course black-tie anniversary dinner open to all members past or present, friends, family and supporters and which has gained a wonderful response
The current band will also be joined by two of its most illustrious alumni as Dr Robert Childs and David Childs, who will perform as guest soloists4BR
