Kerwin legacy benefits youth

A wonderful musical legacy inspired by the life of Simon Kerwin will benefit its first six recipients.

The legacy of the late Simon Kerwin is already helping six recipient bands

Tabby Kerwin has announced that six youth and training bands from across the UK have benefited from the musical legacy of her husband Simon Kerwin.

The Simon Kerwin legacy fund which is being administered through Mode for… was announced in March when Tabby made discretionary donations to a number of brass bands that had an impact on Simon's life.

Overwhelming response

At the same time Tabby also invited applications from youth and training bands for five awards to receive 40 pieces of beginner and training band music valued around £300.

Tabby told 4BR: "I've had an overwhelming response to the award and it's been both exciting and humbling to read about all the super work going on to encourage beginner brass players across the UK.

Whenever anyone says about brass bands being in decline and there being a lack of new musicians, from reading the applications I know there is some phenomenal work going on around the country. It just needs supporting and promoting by all of us."

Six recipients

Tabby added: "I initially announced there would be five awards made of the music, but with such strong applications I have actually made six awards, plus another ten bands that applied also received a gift from Mode for…Publishing of one of Simon's pieces."

The six bands receiving the awards are:
Warbleton Brass Band (Sussex)
Menai Bridge Training Band (Wales)
Riverside Youth Band, Invercylde (Scotland)
Middleton Band (Greater Manchester)
Cheltenham Silver Training Band (Gloucestershire)
Llandudno Town Band (Wales)

I've had an overwhelming response to the award and it's been both exciting and humbling to read about all the super work going on to encourage beginner brass players across the UKTabby Kerwin
