4BR has been informed that a lack of entries has forced the organisers of the 2019 Pennine Action Medical Research Championship to reach a decision to cancel the event for what they call 'the foreseeable future'.
It is understood that despite working over the past 12 months to try and revive the leading youth competition, the organisers received just six confirmed entries for the 2019 contest that was due to take place at Blackpool's Winter Gardens in February.
Difficult decision
Correspondence has now been received by those who were due to have taken part, confirming in the organiser's words that they had "...reached the difficult decision to cancel the event planned for the Winter Gardens in Blackpool next February and call a halt to the Action Medical Research Youth Brass Band Entertainment Championship and Junior Festival, for the foreseeable future."
Despite extending the entry date, only three entrants had been confirmed in the Championship Section and three in the Junior Festival.
Major blow
The news comes as a major blow as it is understood the event had secured support from sources such as Action Medical Research, Findermann Trust, Blackpool Council, Blackpool College, hotels, local schools, Salford University and Blackpool Music Service.
First started back in 1984, the Championships became a very popular feature on the banding calendar with bands entering into the creative ethos of the event by providing many memorable performances full of wonderful playing and exceptional presentation.

Challenges
In a letter to the bands, the respected contest organiser Gary Walczak wrote: "It is clear that there have been many challenges facing Youth Bands in recent years; rising costs of transport, rent and rates, heating costs, to name but a few.
In addition, increased safeguarding legislation, which we heartily support, has impacted on some bands' capacity to recruit volunteers, essential to the running of their organisations.
We thank the many loyal bands and supporters who have been with us during the last 34 years. We have made many true and lasting friendships over this time and we wish you all well."
It is understood entry fees that have been paid will be returned.
