Wychavon award in memory of David Morris

The memory of the fine musician and photographer David Morris will be marked in the years to come at the Wychavon Festival of Brass.

The Wychavon Festival of Brass has confirmed that it will make a special award this year in honour of the memory of David Morris who sadly passed away the day after the 2017 event.

His death shocked the UK banding movement where Dave was a popular performer, conductor and volunteer at many events.

Diverse talents

Led by contest Chairperson Dr Val Trim, the Wychavon Festival of Brass has been determined to recognise his contribution to the banding movement.

She told 4BR: "Dave was a knowledgeable and experienced brass bander, as well as a highly respected photographer, so it seems right to make an award that celebrates his diverse talents.

The David Morris Memorial Award will go to the 'Best Euphonium' this year, in the Second Section. However, we want the award to rotate across all sections in the coming years so that everyone is reminded of him. After all, as a photographer he would appear in all the performance halls and was a familiar figure."

Euphonium players

Dave's widow has given her support to the idea of the 'nomadic' award in his name, which will be presented specifically to euphonium players.

As Val added: "We hope this gives all euphonium players a chance of winning it in the coming years — something we are sure would have delighted Dave."
