The popular BBC television programme 'The One Show' this week featured a story about young musicians playing in the only disability led orchestra in the UK.
The South-West Open Youth Orchestra was formed in 2015 and is part of the OpenUp Music organisation which empowers disabled musicians to build inclusive youth orchestras.
Challenge expectations
Together they develop accessible musical instruments and repertoire, challenge expectations and forge new progression routes through the creation of great music.
The youngsters were featured in the programme which saw them take part in the recent performance of composer Liz Lane's 'Silver Rose' work at Bristol Cathedral with Lydbrook Band and the University of the West of England Singers under the direction of conductor Ian Holmes.
The narrator was Barry Farrimond, CEO of the charity OpenUp Music, who is also better known to millions as the irascible Ed Grundy in the famous radio soap opera 'The Archers'.
Re-scored
Liz re-scored the work through research time at the University of the West of England where she is a Senior Lecturer as part of a Faculty of Environment and Technology Public Engagement and Outreach Award.
