One of the great features of the Whit Friday experience over the past few years has been the increasing participation of youth ensembles and bands at the event.
And this year it sees the first appearance of Wardle Junior Blast — the brilliant young band led by Black Dyke cornet player Lee Rigg, which has already won a plethora of high profile awards thanks to its amazing playing and stunning presentation — all from memory!
Band of the Day
The band is made up of school children from Wardle and Kentmere Academies, as well as St James, Smithy Bridge, St Andrews, Littleborough, Holy Trinity and St Mary's primary schools. Just a couple of months ago they showcased their quality when winning the 'Band of the Day' award at the National Youth Championships of Great Britain at the RNCM in Manchester.
Not worried
Lee told 4BR: "They've been itching to take part ever since I told them about it a couple of years ago — and now I think they are ready to go into action! I've told them to enjoy the occasion and show the huge crowds just how good they are. They are not even worried about the marching!"
He added: "It's also a great opportunity to experience what the older children are undertaking this year as well, with Saddleworth Youth Champions Wardle Academy playing under the baton of Sean Conway and our Junior and Intermediate bands taking part in the Whit Friday processions at Mossley."

Four venues
Wardle Junior Blast will play 'When the Saints' as they march down the various roads to the venues, as well as well as the classic William march 'Slaidburn' — all from memory, and will be playing at four villages starting around 4.30pm.
So if you are in Uppermill, Dobcross, Delph and Denshaw around those times keep both eyes and ears on alert for a band that will be making a huge impression.
