Former Black Dyke principal cornet and Tredegar Band Musical Director Ian Porthouse has told 4BR that he has been delighted at the reception his new IP Brass cornet mouthpiece has received since its launch at the British Open Championship in Birmingham last weekend.
Ian has been working with leading industry professionals over the last couple of years to develop a new mouthpiece to suit the modern brass band player — one that he believes combines traditional characteristics with futuristic possibilities.
Career long interest
"It's been the culmination of a career long interest,"he said.
"Today's cornet players require a mouthpiece that gives flexibility and brilliance without losing the inherent character that produces the traditional brass band cornet sound.
That can only come by combining a truly innovative design with precision quality — and by working with some of the very best designers and engineers I think IP Brass has produced the first of what I hope will become a full range of exceptional mouthpieces."
UK design and manufacture
Designed and manufactured in the UK, Ian believes the IP Brass mouthpiece enables a player to explore the outer limits of performance with security and freedom — something which has been delighted to hear has been the case from initial feedback he has received from players.
"We did a huge amount of trials before the launch to make sure the mouthpiece performed just how I wanted, and the feedback from customers already proves that I think we have come up with a mouthpiece that will meet a modern day players demands."
