Grimethorpe's 'rest day' in Brisbane ended up a busy one.
The majority of the band members spent the time exploring the city, reacquainting themselves with old haunts and expatriate friends and colleagues, as well as combating the inevitable jet lag of the 23 hour inward flights by catching up on a little much needed rest.
Radio times
However, in the afternoon, Dr Robert Childs, Craig Roberts, Shaun Crowther and Jim Fletcher (above) headed to ABC Radio Studios, where they recorded an hour-long feature on Grimethorpe and the brass band genre for ABC Classic FM.
The show was presented by Brett Kelly, principal trombone of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, who himself started his career in brass bands, playing with the Newcastle Band during his formative years.
History
The in-depth programme explored the whole of Grimethorpe's illustrious history; from the founding of the band during the First World War and rise to success, right through the innovative period with Elgar Howarth in the 1970s and the closure of Grimethorpe Colliery and its impact on the band and the community it so proudly represents.
Also discussed was of course the subsequent worldwide 'Brassed Off' phenomenon, as well as the present and planned future activities of the current band.
Music
The feature was illustrated throughout by musical excerpts ranging from a selection of traditional and lighter music through to some major works, including Eric Ball's 'Resurgam' and Gilbert Vinter's 'Spectrum'.
Following the interview, Dr Bob Childs was also featured live on ABC's primetime 'Drive' show before the quartet adjourned to the nearby Plough Inn to link up with the rest of the bandTour Manager Craig Roberts
Fascinating insight
Tour Manager Craig Roberts told 4BR: "The programme proved to be a thought provoking exploration offering a genuinely fascinating insight into the band and medium, as well as featuring some good natured general banter, with some trademark asides from Shaun Crowther!"
He added: "Following the interview, Dr Bob Childs was also featured live on ABC's primetime 'Drive' show before the quartet adjourned to the nearby Plough Inn to link up with the rest of the band — including expatriate Grimethorpe stalwart Dean Morley and a brave appearance by new Brighouse & Rastrick solo euphonium player Glenn Van Looy!"
First tour performance
The band now looks forward to the opening performance of the tour at the 1600 seat Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).
