Newmains set for resurrection return

One of Scottish banding's most famous names is set to return from the dead this weekend with the resurrection of Newmains Band.

Old Band

The process of setting up a brand new Newmains & District Band in North Lanarkshire has reached the next stage of development.

One of the most famous names in Scottish banding history, the original Newmains Band last performed competitively in 1995 — nearly 100 years after it was first formed.

Scottish champion

The band won the Scottish Championship on a number of occasions and was a top flight force until the late 1970's, although sadly it closed its doors for the last time following the loss of many of its long term personnel that used to work at the famous Ravenscraig Steelworks.

Now though, the next step to what will hopefully be a return to the glory days will take place this Saturday (13th June), when the Newmains & District Band will make its first appearance at the Newmains Gala Day

Generating support

Made up of interested local supporters and ex-members, it will be the new band's first public appearance with the aim of generating support and interest in their plans to restore brass band heritage to their community, and more importantly, give youngsters the chance to learn a musical instrument, free of charge.

Driving force

Graeme Goldie, who has been the driving force behind the resurrection, told 4BR: "I have been working with the Scottish Coal Regeneration Trust (SCRT) and the Big Lottery Fund, and most importantly, Newmains Community Trust, to apply for funding.

This is an extremely ambitious project, and I'm fully aware of the obstacles that lie ahead. I have had the help of fellow banders from the brass banding world and it's very much appreciated, and with their help and that of local Newmains people and close friends, this project now has every chance of success."

The aim is to restore the heritage, and build a new legacy for youngsters in the area. More importantly, anyone who plays a brass instrument or is interested in playing one, no matter what age, is also more than welcomeGraeme Goldie

Restore a legacy

He added: "The aim is to restore the heritage, and build a new legacy for youngsters in the area. More importantly, anyone who plays a brass instrument or is interested in playing one, no matter what age, is also more than welcome."
