Fancy judging in Yorkshire?

If you fancy the chance to pit your wits against the official judges in Yorkshire — then now's your chance...

The Association of Brass Band Adjudicators (ABBA) and the Yorkshire Regional Championship Committee have announced that they are to host a ‘Youth Adjudication Panel’ initiative at the forthcoming Yorkshire Area contest in Bradford.

Fourth Section

Leading on from the proactive role taken by ABBA with the recent live broadcast Fourth Section test piece workshop featured on 4BR, the new initiative will see four youngsters (up to the age of 18) take what could be the first enjoyable step on the road to becoming a leading contest adjudicator.

The four lucky participants will be mentored by ABBA Secretary David Hirst throughout the Fourth Section contest, which takes place on Sunday morning, 8th March, (9.00am start) at St George’s Hall.

Judge's box

They will listen to all 11 bands on ‘An English Pastorale’ by Dean Jones, sat in front of the official adjudicator’s box in the auditorium, and will use the same remarks and results sheets as David Thornton and Sandy Smith to help them in their own judgment process. Each lucky youngster will also be provided with a full score of the work.

After prize presentation ceremony, the Youth Panel, alongside David Hirst, will then meet up with the judges to discuss how things went, to pick their brains and ask questions, and to find out more how they made their decisions — all over refreshments that will be laid on.

Free tickets

The Yorkshire Regional Committee will also give free tickets to the youngsters and their parents/guardians on the day, to stay and listen to the bands competing in the Championship Section on Sunday evening — and will give them each a CD recording of the band that they picked as the winners in the Fourth Section.
