Besson Musical Instruments has announced that Dewi Griffiths, principal cornet of British Open champion Tredegar has joined their group of international performance artists.
World class stable
Besson representative Lyndon Chapman told 4BR: "Dewi is a wonderful musician and has long been recognised as one of the best cornet players in the UK.
He joins a world class stable of performers who we work very closely with, and we are delighted to officially welcome him as a Besson artist."
Excellence
He added: "Besson’s investment in the brass band movement is respected worldwide and we continue to ensure we develop long term partnerships with organisations and relationships with performers who mirror our commitment to excellence."
The freelance teacher and conductor has played a central part in Tredegar’s growing success since taking over as principal cornet in 2007, helping them to two British Open victories, with MD, Ian Porthouse the first person to congratulate Dewi on his new role.
"Dewi has been the cornerstone of the band’s success. He is a wonderful player — committed, conscientious and extremely talented. Besson has added a superb musician to their ranks."
Soloist winner
The 33 year old is a past winner of the Harry Mortimer Trophy as the Best Principal Cornet at the Brass in Concert Championship, as well as winning back to back ‘Best Soloist’ awards at the Grand Shield and a triple winner of the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ award at the Welsh Area Championships.
He is current holder of the Stanley Wainwright Memorial Trophy as ‘Best Soloist’ at the 2013 British Open Championship and has proudly held the prestigious post of one of the two fanfare trumpeters of the National Eisteddfod of Wales since 2002.

Thrilled
Dewi added: "I’m thrilled that Besson has asked me to join their international stable of artists. I’ve played on a Prestige since taking over the principal cornet role at Tredegar and it has been a fabulous instrument that has undoubtedly helped me develop as a soloist and performer."
He continued: "I’m looking forward to working with Besson, especially as it will enable me to work further with young players in their performance development — an area which I am passionate about."
Dewi will be giving a masterclass with young players with City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) Band this week.
