Report & Results: 2014 Morley March & Hymn Tune

Yorkshire Imps turn the tables on rivals to claim the popular Morley top prize.

The popular Morley March & Hymn Tune Contest saw a fine turn out of competitors and listeners on the weekend thanks to the generous prize fund and warm weather.

Upset

There was something of an upset too, as Yorkshire Imperial DUT claimed the £500 first prize ahead of contest march specialists Marsden Silver, with reigning champion Skelmanthorpe completing the Yorkshire podium finishers in third.

A resurgent Imps certainly impressed the judges, Alan Morrison and Alan Holdsworth to boost the coffers by also taking the £60 prizes for ‘best’ hymn tune and ‘best’ march performances to head back home £620 better off.

Not enough left

After their successful exertions on Whit Friday, Marsden didn’t quite have enough left in the tank on the day, although by coming runner-up and claiming the prizes for ‘Best Instrumentalist’ and ‘Best Deportment’ they gave their funds another £295 increase.

Despite not being able to retain the title, the Skelmanthorpe organisation had a solid day, with the senior outfit ending third, pocketing £200 in prize money and taking the ‘Best Road March’ prize, whilst their Prospect Brass Ensemble took the ‘Best Second Section’ honours.

Prizes

The ‘Best First Section’ award went to Hade Edge, Elmfield Brass (Stockport) won the ‘Best Fourth Section’, Hade Edge Academy Youth took the ‘Best Youth’ prize and Tewit Youth rounding off a busy weekend by winning the ‘Best Youth Hymn Tune’ and ‘Best Youth Deportment’ prizes.
