The English National Champion, Black Dyke has paid their musical respects to one of the greatest players to have graced the ranks of the famous Queensbury Band.
Deep Harmony
At their last rehearsal, practice was stopped early and the band played ‘Deep Harmony’ in tribute to Derek Jackson, the former Bb Bass player who over a 25 year period with the band helped them win every major contesting honour on numerous occasions.
Legend
Director of Music, Dr Nicholas Childs told 4BR: "Everyone at Black Dyke was saddened to hear of the death of Derek Jackson, one of the legendary Bb Bass players produced by the banding movement.
We finished rehearsal early so we could reminisce about the life of this great player and remind everyone of the contribution he made to Black Dyke. We also paid him our highest tribute by performing our bandsman's hymn 'Deep Harmony’ in his memory.
He was a wonderful player and a very fine man who will be greatly missed by everyone."

Golden sound
Long time friend and fellow tuba player Phil Goodwin added: "Derek's golden sound contributed so much to all those winning performances especially under Major Peter Parkes, who felt he was the most important player in the band because of the foundation he provided."
Matt Routley added: "Derek was the godfather of the Bb bass – with golden hair and a golden sound. He was something of an icon to young bass players, and he will be sadly missed."
