Dyke add new sop and tuba to Queensbury ranks

Black Dyke sign up French soprano star and RNCM tuba student as MD starts to reshape English champion.

Black Dyke has acted swiftly to fill the gaps in their ranks following recent departures from the Queensbury band.

The English National champion has signed soprano star Benjamin Richeton from Fairey, with RNCM student Joshua Flynn joining on Eb tuba.

Highly regarded

The highly regarded French soprano player graduated from the University of Salford where he was awarded the prestigious Harry Mortimer Performance Prize, and is a past finalist in the BBC Young Brass Musician competition.

Over the last few years he has become one of the most sought after soprano players in top flight banding after producing a number of high class performances with the Stockport band – most notably at the National Finals in London last year.

Talent

Black Dyke’s Director of Music Dr Nicholas Childs told 4BR: "Benjamin is a fine player, and it is going to be an exciting time working with such a talent. He is going to be a great addition to the band."

Benjamin added: "I have had the most enjoyable two and a half years with all my friends at Fairey, filled with great memories and performances.

It’s very exhilarating to have been asked to join Black Dyke, and I am very excited at the opportunity of joining a group of such talented musicians."

Tuba signing

Meanwhile, Black Dyke also confirmed the signing of Joshua Flynn on Eb tuba.

The second year student at the RNCM is currently studying with the Halle Orchestra’s Ewan Easton, and is a past principal tuba of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and a proud member of Oldham Lees Band.

Phil Goodwin, Black Dyke's long-serving tuba player commented: "I've had the pleasure of working with Josh for the last five years or so at the National Youth Band, where he has displayed so much potential. We are pleased to welcome him into the section."
