Despite their busy concert schedule, the star players of Grimethorpe Colliery Band continue to provide extensive help, encouragement and top class tuition in their community thanks to their innovative partnership with the local Birkwood Primary School.
Lucky
Birkwood’s Music Co-ordinator Esther Sutton Smith told 4BR that lucky pupils get to learn to play brass instruments from the members of the band, with the impact that has already been made ensuring that a production line of young playing talent is already flowing along nicely.
Later this month the first public performance of the pupils will take place with Roger Webster taking to the stage at the school to perform with the delighted young players.
Delighted
"The band supports our pupils and their families with educational and musical opportunities through sponsorship, which enables many of our children to learn to play brass instruments," Esther explained.
"We are delighted that Roger will be joining the children on stage – and they can’t wait either!"

Enjoyed
Roger has worked alongside the management and players of the band to support the children, their families and the wider community with musical, social and educational opportunities – and has enjoyed himself immensely.
Roger told 4BR: "This is the first opportunity to show the progress that has been made with Grimethorpe’s link with the school.
It’s been a wonderful project to have been part of and I’m sure everyone will enjoy an uplifting evening of musical entertainment on the 19th June."
