Childs gets balance just right

David Childs tells 4BR that he believes he has got the perfect balance between different types of exhaustion — and he wouldn't miss out on them for the world.

Euphonium star David Childs has told 4BR that he is enjoying combining life as an international freelance soloist and house husband – although he doesn’t quite know which is more exhausting!

Spain

David recently gave a stamina sapping solo performance in aid of Cancer Research UK in Cambridge – the latest high profile event in a packed concert and recording calendar that has seen him travel to Spain in the last month to record a new CD.

However, the air-miles and car journeys are well worth it he says – especially as he is now able to devote more time to enjoying being with his young son Benjamin at home in Wales.

Ideal mix

"It’s become an ideal mix," David told 4BR. "I can plan my work around home life in such a way that I don’t miss out on anything important.

It’s wonderful to be able to make a trip to Spain to play with the brilliant musicians of the Lalin Wind Orchestra and Johan De Meij and be back to enjoy three days at home with Benjamin", although, he laughs as he adds, "Both can be equally exhausting at times!"

Premiere

That Spanish trip saw David give the premiere Johan’s ‘UFO Concerto’ as well as feature on the composer’s new CD, intriguingly entitled, ‘Extreme Beethoven!’

Following his return to the UK David performed at the Cancer Research UK event and fitted in a lunchtime recital performance at Bridgwater Hall, before heading back to his house husband duties.

Very special

"The Cambridge concert was very special – it was such an honour to help such a great cause, and I really enjoyed the opportunity to give a recital performance at Bridgewater Hall playing music by Karl Jenkins, Hummel and Simone Mantia."

He added: 2The venue holds a lot of special memories for me, and it’s a wonderful place to play, so I really enjoyed myself. All that and I got back in time to see Benjamin and watch some football together too – it was perfect!"
