Taking the band away is a great way of getting the best from your players.
The excitement of travelling together, of seeing new places and experiencing new venues and perhaps most of all having the real pleasure of making music for appreciative audience who you’ve never met before.
Make the most
So it’s important to choose a destination that’s not just fun to visit, but will get the most from your band musically as well.
Germany’s romantic Rhine Valley, for centuries home to emperors, kings and legends, combines the ingredients of a fantastic band tour: a dramatic natural landscape, picturesque Rhine villages, year-round festivals, and some of Germany’s most distinctive food and drink.
Rewarding musical experience
Less than a day’s travel from the channel, the Rhineland opens up Germany to easy exploration and rewarding musical experiences.
2011 is a particularly good time to explore the Rhine Valley.
Not only is there the usual welcoming atmosphere and busy summer programme of band concerts to enjoy and take part in, but the area around Koblenz is hosting the (deep breath!) 'Bundesgartenschau Koblenz' – loosely, the Federal Garden Show in the Koblenz area, showing off some gorgeous colours and scents as the area gears up for an influx of tourists from 15 April to late October.

No better time
Musical events are all part of the celebrations, so this couldn’t be a better time to visit.
But there’s plenty more to see and do as well. Keeping with the horticultural theme, the Rhine Valley boasts the largest collection of vineyards in all of Germany, and the light white wines are a refreshing way to relax after a great concert.
You can learn about the wines in a guided tasting tour in the lovely town of Rüdesheim, where you can also enjoy traditional food and drink on the Drosselgasse – a tiny pub-lined street where merriment is made all day, every day.
Cuise the Rhine
Visiting the romantic towns along the majestic river wouldn’t be complete without a cruise on the mighty Rhine itself: as you sail along, you’ll see imposing castles, the many vineyards, and the Loreley Rock.
Legend has it that Loreley, a beautiful Rhine Maiden, used to sit upon the rock and sing to lure passing ships to ruin on the deep rocks below the strong currents.
Audiences
Thankfully, these days, music is likely to draw audiences to the many lovely bandstands and squares in the area and is altogether much more pleasant!
There’s so much happening in the Rhineland at every time of year – in October, Cologne even boasts its own mini Oktoberfest, when you should sample the local Kölsch, and perhaps take in a Brauhaustour (brewery tour) at the same time.
Best hotels and venues
2011 is looking to be a busy year in the Rhine Valley. We’re encouraging all our bands to make sure they book their tour early, as the best hotels and venues will be quickly snapped up.
