Event organiser Tom Davoren has announced the full programme of works to be performed at the forthcoming Cardiff New Brass Festival.
New works
Two new more works have found their way onto the menu with Simon Dobson’s rarely heard 'Fanfare No. 2', originally written for the opening of a new wing of the Royal Albert Hall receiving its first performance outside London as an opening to the festival performed by Wormshead Brass Ensemble.
Fanfare openings appear to be the order of the day with Gareth Glyn's 'Dolbadarn -Millennium Fanfare' also featuring at the event.
'Epitaph for Hillsborough' is an emotional memoriam to the 96 people who lost their lives at the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, whilst his 'Storm' for trombone and brass quintet is an exploration of his driving rhythmic style4BR
World premieres
Three world premieres will be performed by BTM Band conducted by Tom Davoren, and will include Lucy Pankhurst's 'Schiehallion', a darkly hued and descriptive work, flooded with Celtic influences from the famous Fairey Hill of the Caledonians.
Distinct
Two major works from Peter Meechan's will embody two distinct aspects of his compositional voice. His 'Epitaph for Hillsborough' is an emotional memoriam to the 96 people who lost their lives at the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, whilst his 'Storm' for trombone and brass quintet is an exploration of his driving rhythmic style.
Wormshead Brass meanwhile has carefully selected a programme of music commissioned from Welsh composers over recent years.
Clifford's 'O Pastor Animarum' is musically based on the religious plainsong of the same name and Burtch's 'Wormshead Suite' is a dynamic work consisting of four contrasting movements.
Worm
North Walian composer Bill Connor's 13 movement 'Worm Head South' is in the composer's own words: "A worm (aka Kevin Keeyay) who declares his intention to go South.....and unravel the truth........ yet the truth.....like families and that.......his journey is episodic but continuous, two facts of which he is thankfully unaware......."
