Neish celebrates CD awards

Tuba star celebrates as latest release picks up first award of the festive season.

Neish

'Salt of the Earth', the debut solo release from tuba artist Les Neish has scooped two solo CD awards from Brass Band World and British Bandsman magazines.

Two halves

Released in October 2009, this disc is one of two halves, the first accompanied by pianist Martyn Parkes, comprising mainly recital pieces, the second featuring specially commissioned repertoire accompanied by Foden’s Band.

Subtle

Writing in British Bandsman, composer Simon Dobson who judges the award stated: "Les’s playing is subtle and moving, powerful and funny. It’s hard to see any other mainstream brass band solo CD beating this for content or ability."

Pleased

Mark Wilkinson of Fodens told 4BR: "Fodens are extremely pleased that Les has won these prestigious awards, with a number of tracks being accompanied by the band. The solo playing on the CD is astonishing and confirms Les’ position as arguably the best tuba player of his generation."

Really delighted

Commenting on the awards, Les added: "I'm really delighted that my first solo CD has won these awards. I know there was stiff competition with some excellent solo releases this year, but I'm glad that the variety in the programme appealed to the panels. It was great to work with Martyn Parkes, Fodens, Adam Goldsmith and Brian Hilson. It really was a great team effort!!"

He concuded: "I'm now looking forward to performing part of the Salt of the Earth with the Brass Band of Battle Creek at the annual Christmas Concert on Saturday."
